SECONDARY: Science Innovation Lab (Virtual)
Class
Lessons
Here is the class outline:
1. Welcome to Week 1 of Science Innovation Labs!
MS Teams Channel
This program is designed to engage students in-depth in science content, concepts, and practices. Through cutting-edged virtual experimental lab, we will put students in the role of STEM professionals tasked with solving real-world problems via interactive activities online, including case studies. Each case starts with a real-world problem and then takes students through foundational knowledge and virtual guided-inquiry activities as they work to solve it. |
2. Week 2: Meowsis
MS Teams Channel
As a geneticist in an animal hospital, students learn about genetic changes in meiosis to determine the reason why a male cat can have calico fur coloring. |
3. Week 3: Cell Respiration
MS Teams Channel
This week, you will be playing a role as a Medical toxicologist. As a medical toxicologist, you will learn about cell respiration to save the life of a CIA agent that has been poisoned. |
4. Week 4 "Enzymes"This week you will be playing a role as a Veterinary technician. As a veterinary technician, you will learn about enzymes to help a dog that has been eating normally but is losing a lot of weight. |
5. Week 5: EvolutionWorking as a CDC researcher, learners investigate an outbreak of multi-drug resistant bacterial infections and determine how evolution was involved by tracing the source and cause of the outbreak. |
6. Week 6: HomeostasisIn the role of a physician assistant, you will help a young man, named Anthony, who has Type II diabetes and high blood pressure. You must make a diagnosis and then must apply the principles of filtration and homeostasis to help Anthony. |
7. Week 7: Photosynthesis
MS Teams Channel
As a marine biologist learners learn about photosynthesis to help scientists in Australia determine why the coral in the Great Barrier Reef is bleaching. |
8. Week 8: Electrons & Chemical Reactions
MS Teams Channel
The Secret Service has arrested suspects accused of counterfeiting coins from 1915 valued at $50,000 each. The learners act as a forensic scientist to investigate the crime scene and examine the evidence. Students learn about electrons and chemical reactions to recreate the methods used to make the coins and prepare evidence for the court case. |
