Here is the class outline:

1. Milestone 1: Understand: What is community service?

Feb 23

Objective: Students learn about what community service is, why people engage in community service, and what opportunities they may have to support their community. - Discussion about the expectation of the final product - Learners generate a list of Need-to-Know (NTK) questions - Learners discover what is community and community service - Students watch/observe a community service leader and connect the discussion to their own experience - Written Reflection/Exit Ticket

2. Milestone 2: Field Research: Understand the current needs of the community and identify potential...

Objective: Students engage in research to get a better understanding of the current needs of the community. They could explore the different community service opportunities and determine which one would match the needs of the community, and which is most feasible to implement. - Learners collect data on the current needs of the community - Students investigate various community service opportunities - Learners generate a list of ways they can serve their community - Learners elaborate on any ideas by extending or adding on the initial idea. - Revisit the NTK questions and add new information - Written Reflection/Exit Ticket

3. Milestone 3: Ideate, Implement, & Present: How can we best support our community?

Objective: Learners work in project teams to design a plan for how they can best support their community service organization/group. - Learners participate in a community service project and reflect on how their service affected their community. - Learners will brainstorm and evaluate community service options - Learners will choose the most feasible solution and plan how to implement their chosen service projects. - Learners work on their presentations and videos - Students engage in a critique protocol to give and receive feedback from their peers on their conclusions - Students present their videos to the local audience - Students elicit feedback from attendees - Revisit NTK questions to identify questions that have been answered - Written Reflection/Exit Ticket
