Lessons

Here is the class outline:

1. MS1: UNDERSTAND (Week 1)

In order to effectively come with a sustainable solution to a problem, it is important to have a wider view and understanding of the problem or the challenge you are trying to solve. This is where you will collect all the existing and available data online and off-line.

2. MS2: EMPATHY (Weeks 2-3)

This is the time for you to set out and start the field research, observe, talk to people and collect first hand information. We are interested on the human factor, understanding the problem from the viewpoint of the people directly impacted by the problem you are trying to solve. We must look into all the aspects of the human being: physical, cultural, sociological, and psychological.

3. MS3: DEFINE (Week 4)

After getting a wider view of the problem from the existing data and from the perspective of stakeholders, it is time to redefine the problem in the light of the new insight of the stakeholders and their environment. Come up with an actionable problem statement that will be your Point of View.

4. MS4: IDEATE (Week 5)

Ideation is generating lots of ideas and to solve the problem defined by the stakeholders. It is important to have a clear understanding of what we are trying to solve in order for us not to be lost in the expansive and creative process without constraints. It's often the wild ideas that spark visionary thoughts. Having a clear set of rules, a brainstorm session can bring hundreds of fresh ideas.

5. MS5: PROTOTYPE, TEST, ITERATE (Weeks 6-10)

Experimentation brings your ideas to life. Building prototypes means making ideas tangible that forces us to think realistically about how people will interact with the concept that we are trying to design. It is when we bring ideas from paper to real life and sharing them to other people. Receiving direct feedback drives to further improve and refine the idea. Prototype is capable of provoking an emotional reaction in someone even before the solution exists.

6. MS6: SHOWCASE PRESENTATION (Weeks 11-12)

Jul 31

Evolution is the reflection phase of the outcome in the entire experience. It could be the next cycle of understanding, research, point of view, ideation, and prototyping. This is the part where you gain new insights on what works and what does not, what needs to be refined, redesigned, or experimented again.
